Jay Timms On Elevate The Conversation

Jay Timms is a licensed medicinal marijuana caregiver, businessman and certified personal trainer. He joins us on Elevate The Conversation on this Thursday March 23.

Coming from the world of sports, Jay understands that pain management is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, this management usually comes in the form of highly addictive opioids.

Jay Timms spent the first 17 years of his career working in the Pharmaceutical and Biotech industry, He worked for companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Schering Plough after earning his BSc in Kinesiology. After becoming frustrated with Big Pharma and its attitude to pain management, Jay was motivated to explore alternative medicine. He now specializes in helping to manage pain, depression, anxiety (PTSD), tumours (oncology) and neuromuscular disorders.

What got you interested in cannabis as medicine?

One thing that really sparked my interest is when I was at a neurology convention about two-and-a-half or three years ago in Vancouver. It was actually one of the largest conventions on the planet. We had the best of the best in the world there.

There was a different room for different conditions, and each room had about 30-40 physicians. One room that had around 150 physicians was for the use of cannabis for paediatrics and epilepsy. Whenever you’re talking about using drugs for paediatrics, it definitely has to be safe and effective.

So once I saw that they [doctors] were using it in that realm, it really piqued my interest. I started doing more clinical research. There are thousands of published studies coming out now, but before it was small-scale studies involving 30, maybe 40 people. Now, there are studies involving hundreds of people and some of the best universities in the world.

Are you involved in any of those studies?

No, not involved. I just did my research and use that information for myself in order to grow and to inform others.

You’re a certified personal trainer, primary caregiver and medicinal marijuana cultivator. What’s your primary focus?

I actually had that question asked of me last night. My focus now is to open up and shine a positive light on this new industry, whether it’s for medicinal purposes, recreational purposes or anything else.

It’s an industry in its infancy, and there are so many opportunities. I think that the industry is seen in a bad light at the moment, and I think it needs to be seen in a better one.

What we’ve seen is that the fastest growing demographic of cannabis users are those over 50. Is that something you’ve experienced in your day-to-day life and working with patients?

Yes, you’re right there. The age group we’re looking at – a lot of the people are “in-the-closet” users. But it’s funny… Once you kind of pull them out of the closet and start talking to them, you do have more of an idea and see how many professional people actually use cannabis.

What do you think we can do to help change the way people are thinking about cannabis and its potential as a medicine?

So it’s about getting more professional people – doctors, physicians, lawyers, accountants… people of that stature – to come out and start speaking about the benefits they get from medical cannabis. This would make it more acceptable socially.

Your brand really promotes wellness. How do you incorporate cannabis into your personal training?

When you’re looking at personal training, wellness and fitness, a lot of people think only about what’s going on inside the gym. But the gym is only half the battle. You go in and you dust your body up. The main thing about fitness is the issue of recovery.

So, looking at cannabis, one thing that’s going to be big is the anti-inflammatory properties. After going in and working out hard, you’re going to have joints aching, muscle soreness, ligaments stretched… And all that’s from inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis help a lot.

Also, as you sleep, your body’s cells recover. Sleep-time is when your body recuperates and regenerates, and we all know that indica strains help you sleep better.
